The magic of baking soda

Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate. It is a natural substance that is totally harmless to our environment and our body, it is eco-friendly. I have been using it since I started to learn to bake but it is only rcently that I discovered another side of this simple looking white substance.
Besides baking, baking soda is actually very good for cleaning. With a bit of water and some baking soda, almost everything can get be cleaned. Ya.... almost everything, from kitchen to toilet, from clothes to toys. Note: Not for raw untreated wood and aluminium.

Few weeks ago, as I was ironing some fabrics, suddenly there was a strong burning smell. I checked my fabric, they looked ok except for some weird brown stain. I checked again to realise that the bottom of the iron was burned, it was coated with a thick layer of burned substance, I thinked it was due to the starch on the fabrics that I had been ironing. Oh goosh, I don't want to buy a new iron. But I had to wait for it to cool down slightly before I could clean it. I managed to rubbed off some of the burned stuff, but a large patch still remained. It was then I remember this book 《212种小苏打生活妙招》(212 ways of using baking soda for home). I damped a piece of kitchen towel and dabbed a bit of baking soda, without much effort the stain was gone!

I'm still reading the book, and trying to use the methods for cleaning my house. I think I'm going to throw away all the harmful detergents soon. :)

I agree, brilliant stuff! Vinegar does pretty good too. I haven't used a commercial cleaning product for over 12 months now and I love the lack of chemical smell in my house.
